Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 11 "spring 2012"

YAWWWWWN!... This guy has been hibernating! Spring has officially sprung and I'm back to give you a taste of some of my favorite tunes from the past 6 months or so. Apologies for my dormant nature during the winter time. I was finding myself in front of my turntables less and less, but after a new mixer purchase (Rane Empath) and a new living room arrangement I've been much more active in playing/buying records.

Mixing this seasonal tunes was truly exciting, I found that things came together quite naturally this time around. Sometimes I have to cut tunes that I don't want to just for the sake of making the mix fluent. This time around I found things much easier and surprising. Let's talk about some of the highlights!

Starting things off with Tropics "Mouves" was essential. I knew this was the opener the second I started working on this mix. The song is visual: a cloudy, dreamy, weightless flight. Chris Ward, a young talented multi-instrumentalist is responsible for nearly every piece of sound on his colorful debut full-length album Parodia Flare (planet-mu). "Mouves" is a shining example of the rest of album, highly recommended! I get into a little afro-vibe after this with tunes from Four Tet, TEED, and a cool, dancehall afro-beat remix by Daphni (Dan Snaith/Caribou). Clark releases a brilliant new album Iradelphic which in his own words is, "looming, ambiguous, radiant. Glowing, whole, invincible, complete." "Secret" jumps back and forth into a 3 dimensional listening soundscape from a present female vocal to deeper rhythmic backing vocals then huge shuffling drums and growling synths all held together by an almost brazilian guitar melody. I really love the way this dives even deeper mixing into Jamie Woon's "Blue Truth," immediately follwed by a monster of a tune "Dive Summers" produced by former Good Looking Records artist Blu Mar Ten. "While You Dooooo" by Teebs was one of my single favorite tracks of 2011. There is something very specific about where this track resounds in my head. Sure it's dreamy and a bit repetitive but Teebs knows something that other beatmakers can't touch. There is an organic element to his music that I really connect with, where other cats just seem to keep making cold digital/analog rackets. Jumping ahead in the mix, fellow label-mate on Brainfeeder Lapalux is making some serious racket right now. I really wanted to play "Moments" off the When You're Gone EP but something about his (beatless) take on Fink's "Perfect Darkness" that somehow IS a perfect darkness. It's so moody. I love it.

Looking back at the cover art for this and having relinquished my desire for naming these seasonal tunes mixes, I realize that the context, the feeling that these songs evoke are what define the period in time where I really HEAR this music. There is something blooming about all of the songs on this mix. They are all desperate to break the surface, undulating energy turns into bright colorful pieces. "Swing Star" by disco/balearic genius Todd Terje is the perfect example of this. The tempo change about halfway through the mix really woke me up too.  The energy carries on into Modeselektor's unhinged "Blue Clouds." It's one of those songs that could just keep building for 20 minutes and I'd still be teetering on the edge. Towards the end of the mix you'll find more warming and textured pieces like Balam Acab's "Motion" and "Daniel" from Twin Sister which mix together beautifully. Also don't miss full length albums from John Talabot and Tanlines both have been on heavy rotation and helped wrap up the mix as closing songs.

BONUS. New video from Tanlines!

Thanks for listening and I hope this turns out to be an essential soundtrack to your Spring!

Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 9 "perfect pair"

HAPPY SPRING! (well, in Chicago... sorta) Despite my feeble attempts to craft a happy, much less moody mix than January's "new-fashioned" here we are again with something similar. However, I must say that even the deepest of tracks on this mix still sound to me like sprouts of life desperately working to break the surface and catch the long awaited early spring sunlight. Lots of inspiration for this mix: Next weekend The Pickled Tomato is going on tour! Last year, my good friends Emily & Andy left the NYC grind to find themselves in the middle of the Washington D.C. restaurant scene. Lyon Hall is a bustling French brasserie with an Alsatian focus, housemade charcuterie & baked breads, traditional sausages and carefully procured meat/fish all with a strong focus on seasonal ingredients. Chef Andy & Emily have invited me to join the team in hosting this month's Farm dinner featuring a favorite spring ingredient: STRAWBERRIES! Saturday night (4.16.11) I'll be djing at Lyon Hall and Sunday I'll be doing the wine/beer pairings for the dinner. Stay tuned to hear more about the event I'll be posting all about it later this month! What better to pair a strawberry farm dinner with than some great spring tunes! (and maybe some old riesling & some chenin, oh and some Bugey!) Check it.

Psychedelic-pop Kiwis Connan Mockasin open things up under Erol Alkan's breezy exposé. LOVING this tune right now, I had to mix out of it halfway because the original remix is a monster 10 MINUTES. I almost let it go because it never gets old but I had to be fair to all the other tunes. Moving right into the young Swede (babe) Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers." I can't NOT sing along to this song, and the drums (!) and the organs (!). I make sure my roommates aren't home when I'm in the shower belting out this anthem. Also just below the surface creeping it's way through the dirt and "perfectly paired" up is new material from Burial, Four Tet, & Thom Yorke. "Mirror" definitely has a more Burial feel to it while the flip (TEXT10) "Ego" leans more towards a classic Four Tet sound. Amazing collab nonetheless, they were destined to make a record together. Heads up for the new Burial stuff on Hyperdub too particularly "Stolen Dog"...feeling it! Holy Ghost! sees full length release on DFA. "Bizniz" from Tune-Yards makes me think of my friend Marisa and I romping around a dancefloor (watchout).
Holy shit: Daedelus. Floating Points. Mike Milosh. Three of my favorite artists all working together. You guys freaking killed me with this masterpiece. I had to let this one play out: the fingersnaps, Milosh's warm lull rushing by, Sam Shepard's (aka Floating Points) analog keys and shuffley tambourine , and no small amount of bass... all add up to 7 minutes of enveloping  joy. The Weeknd has become something of an internet phenomenon self releasing "House of Balloons" with plenty of nods from indie critics and mainstream heads alike. "What You Need" is dark, moody, sexy, and serious all at the same time. NEW BIBIO ALBUM! One of my favorite artists Bibio has released "Mind Bokeh" recently with much anticipation. It's not as folky as Ambivalence Avenue but much more textured and while he finds himself exploring many new musical paths it is still distinctly BIBIO. It took me forever to pick a song off the new album there's so much unique stuff on it I had trouble finding a way to fit something in. I think "Light Seep" serves well as a progression from Mux Mool's take on Take into Charles Bradley's "I Believe in Your Love." Chuck, a breakthrough voice from the past follows suit with an album full of modern soul sounds (a la Daptone) much like classic cohorts Lee Fields & Sharon Jones. In an increasingly turbulent America, more and more I keep hearing classic soul sounds popping up with lyrics and feelings that all sing true. "Keep Putting Soul Up..." because it sounds so good right now. Finishing things off much like other mixes (ahem James Blake) Zoo Kid proves that these brit yoots are really on to something.

CHEERS,
HAPPY SPRING.

Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 8 "new-fashioned"

Happy New Year everyone! For those of you that downloaded it, I hope you enjoyed 2010 my year in music wrapup mix. It's 2011 now and I'm back on the Seasonal Tunes train, in true fashion, reflecting feelings of the cold and bleak Chicago winter. I'd like to think that despite the intentions of artists and their musical style, somehow the time of year they release an album is extremely relevant. As happy as I am with this mix I can't help but think about how different this is going to sound in July. This is pretty much my intention with these mixes, to highlight musical seasonality.

We start off here with a new Dublin based All-City Records collaboration between Martyn & Mike Slott. "Pointing Fingers" seems to be more stylistically driven by Slott but still moody and dense enough to fit both producers modus operandi. Before I even get into the rest of this mix I'll say that this opener is pretty much the musical incarnation of my life so far in January 2011. I love how restless it gets in the second half of the track. The mix evolves into new stuff from blast-from-the-past Warp band Seefeel. Continuing their venture blending shoegaze and electronica, this album couldn't possibly come at a more appropriate time. Listening to "Dead Guitars" makes all of the reverberated chill-wave nonsense from the past year just melt into the gutters. This song is so freaking powerful and crunchy, yet creeps along steadily layering on top of itself and NEVER letting go right up until "Lemonade" trickles in by Montreal based dreamy-pop group Braids. I should also give mention that Seefeel's new album has some of the best cover-art I've seen in a long time. Somehow I squeeze some dubsteppy business in here, most notably "Fool Me" off the REALLY great Evelyn EP (Black Acre Records) from the one like Fantastic Mr. Fox. Duran Duran song "New Religion" gets a groovy boogie makeover from Italo-King Bottin's new outfit Tinpong. New Toro Y Moi album doesn't have anywhere near the same appeal as last years Causers of This but "Still Sound" definitely a highlight and I love how well this worked with the new Destroyer single "Kaputt." Dan Bejar once again reinvents himself on this record and this time by way of a bunch of airy soft-rock textures and vamped saxophone riffs. It's decidedly still a Destroyer record but the emphasis here seems more on the lush 80s sound rather than lyrical composition. Kaputt is another record that I find very musically relevant to now... it just sounds right. We've been playing it at the winebar a bunch lately and it's still not old or stale (yet). New Cut Copy single is mildly very addicting, hence why it's even on here. I'm not a huge Cut Copy fan but I can't deny their ability to create super catchy dance tunes that seem to border ever so slightly on cheese but never actually make it there. Moving into one of my FAVORITE tunes right now from UK based threesome Metronomy. Up until now I've really enjoyed their remixes, some of which giving them their indie-dance cred. That's not to ignore their clean production and in many cases sounding more like a less quirky, more techno influenced Mount Kimbie (also a fav). Nevertheless, they are going more the indie-dance route here with "She Wants" which, by listening to the rhythm and tempo, sounds like they've turned into a band but brought the warm electronic synths along with them. The video for this song RULES too.

For some reason lately I've been obsessed with music videos involving tracking shots (ahem..sara). Forthcoming Boxcutter album on Planet-Mu has got me twitching impatiently. "Ufonik" featuring vocalist Brian Greene can be found on their latest "14 songs.." compilation. SEPALCURE! aka Machinedrum and some other dude. They are releasing some quality stuff right now, check out the Fleur EP on HOTFLUSH for sure. All of this is leading up to yes, James Blake. Clearly he's been all over my mixes and most people's top-lists the past year and this is all for a good reason. His self titled debut album drops this month on R&S and is really something else. And if you didn't see his brain-melting performance on bbc, you should click here. "To Care (Like You)"...  I can't even really talk about it right now, just turn it (way) up. I've always had this thing for listening to quiet and minimal music loud as fuck. Snd anyone?

Ok that's it.  Enjoy the mix, it should help you pass the winter.
...that and a blood orange old-fashioned.

Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 7 "crush"

This is most likely my favorite podcast to date.  Things came together so naturally, I had a lot of fun mixing this.  What an exciting time of year:  GRAPES! HARVEST! CRUSH!  I was in Austria last year at this time touring the Wachau and Kamptal/Kremstal and the smell of must and fermentation was EVERYWHERE.  I'll never forget those smells biking from one sleepy wine town to the next.  I think the key, for me at least, to remembering this trip so well was that all of my senses were constantly stimulated.  I'll never forget riding into Krems with all my shit packed on my bike and back, stomach full of beer & wurst, the smell of fresh grapes being pressed all around me, fireworks display in the distance, and my trusty headphones sealing the deal... making it one of the better moments in my life.

So I wasn't shooting for a particular theme with this mix but it came together in a similar organic way making it fit right into the harvest season.  There are lots of peaceful, ethereal moments on the mix that stand out, "Children Of The Times" by Irish Band & Planet Mu recent signing Solar Bears followed by "Waterparker" by Botany.  James Blake is killing it right now with some of the most original music I've ever heard.  "Don't You Think I Do" off the Klavierwerke EP is punchy yet extremely quiet.  The light knocks beside these wishy washy splashes shuffle me into a weird and happy mental space.  The only place I can think to travel after that is the Spanish islands where Young Turk's El Guincho  makes insanely cool modern tropicália.  "Bombay" totally snuck up on me a few months ago and I've been playing the hell out of it since.  The video...  well, I'm just gonna post it and let you decide for yourself (it's fucking great).  Gonjasufi's "A Sufi & a Killer," also a favorite album for the year, sees a remix album release that includes Bibio's take on "Candyland".  Debut album "Forget" from Twin Shadow is AMAZING.  Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys released "Shark Ridden Waters" as a promo for his 3rd solo album coming out soon (you can d/l the song on his site here).  and FlyLo kills his coworkers with this video.  Shouts to MWNL & Pitchfork.

Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 6 "sing me a song"

Summer is ending... the tomatoes have been juicy and delicious (especially the fuzzy peach ones!), and I feel fall in the early evening breeze.  I have to say that I'm probably a better dj than a writer so hopefully the music will evoke the perfect soundtrack for your fall.  While fall does make me think of things like romance, undoubtedly a theme here, it still always has a somber beauty to me which you'll find in such songs as Jono McCleery's "Tomorrow", an amazing instrumental from LA's beatmaker TAKE and the wildly different-than-original Mount Kimbie rmx of Andreaya Triana's single off her new album Lost Where I Belong, one of many GREAT new releases currently out on Ninja Tune.  I couldn't help but feature both the original and the remix.  Speaking of Ninja tune... the last song: MASSIVE, cinematic beauty from Eskmo is completely engrossing.  "Don't Let it Pass from José Gonzales project JUNIP sees it's full release that is easily a favorite for the whole year, PLEASE get it.  Sing Me A Song was my desire to feature some great vocal stuff out right now.  Janelle Monáe, like miss Triana, is a complete diva yet a completely new voice in popular music.  Continuing with the fun/dancy vibe I can't get enough of that Lindstrøm/Prins Thomas rmx of "Swoon."  I love how it mixes into the following leafy/breezy tunes from Axel Boman & Oriol.  Stones Throw comes correct (as always) with two new releases from incredible male vocalists Aloe Blacc & Mayer Hawthorne.  More doubled up releases from  Tru Thoughts... Maddslinky, aka Zed Bias, has always been one of my favorite 2-step garage producers.  "Special" is true to name w/Omar on vocals... HEAT!  followed by label mates Belleruche & Hint on the remix.  Throw this mix in your phones and go on a walk, tis the season!

Seasonal Tunes Mix Series Vol. 5 "mattyPAN"

Summer rolls on...  I started this mix with 45 songs in mind.  If that says anything about how much good stuff is coming out right now, then I don't know what does. I'm sad I couldn't squash in the new Matthew Dear - Little People (Black City), or that great new stuff from Lower Dens but I managed to whittle it down.  Loving the new EP from Ninja Tune's Jaga Jazzist, especially the Prins Thomas mix of Bananfluer Overalt, but I just couldn't resist that insane bassline on 220V/Spektral (FINAL Mix).  Mixed into upcoming house superstars Azari, III from Toronto... keep yer eye out for their album on TURBO early in 2011.  I know "I Can Change" has been out for a sec but as far as I'm concerned it's one of the most essential tunes of the summer and it makes me smile REAL big.  The new Arcade Fire album... I shouldn't even have to tell you how freaking amazing it is, so I'm not.  "Rattling Cage" from Forest Swords is maddening with it's dubby twang, I almost can't handle how good it is.  He's "interested in music that kind of echoes the environment it was created in...” if that's the case I want to go there for a week without my cell phone and come back with +10 skill points.  Something about the heat and the sun setting makes balearic grooves like the CFCF and the Todd Terje tunes seep under my skin and right back out into my sweaty t-shirt.  I wanna hear that stuff LOUD... on the beach (Seb, you know what I'm talkin' about).  The last part of the mix includes some mind-altering beauty off the new Mount Kimbie album "Crooks & Lovers", title track off the new Oriol "Night & Day" (!!!!!!!), and one from my fav producer of the year SBTRKT.  enjoy!
